Here at Eagle and Pearl, we are careful to pick the finest artisans that represent the quality, sophistication, and ethical standards our customers have come to expect from our family-owned jewelry store. Today we would like to introduce you to one of our most prestigious jewelry designers, UK-based Fei Liu, and the awards he has garnered over his 15+ years of working at the pinnacle of the jewelry industry.

 Fei Liu is an award-winning British designer who takes his influences from Eastern art and culture, fusing them effortlessly with the finest Western design techniques to provide cutting-edge contemporary jewelry that is both elegant, and wearable. He operates out of his base in the illustrious Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham - home to some of the world’s finest jewelers, gemologists, and horologists. As a child he was a creative soul, blending a love for ink paintings with Chinese calligraphy as a form of expression capturing thoughts beyond his tender years. Yet it wasn’t until he visited a Russian crown jewelry exhibition that he began to appreciate the art of jewelry design. In 1998 he applied to the Birmingham School of Jewellery and was accepted on their Jewellery and Silversmithing degree course, paving the way for his future award-winning career.

 In 2006, Fei Liu founded Fei Liu Fine Jewellery as a means to help individuals create bespoke jewelry that celebrates special moments. By carefully designing each piece by hand, choosing the perfect stones to showcase in each jewelry piece, and adhering to his mantra ‘color, sculpture, wearability’ he has created a following of fans eager to snap up an item from his latest collection. In fact, royalty and celebrities have all been seen wearing Fei Liu’s shimmering silver and gold luxury designs.

It is this design flexibility, his skill, and the acclaim that he has been given which has created such a buzz around his ‘wearable art’ pieces.

The First of Many Awards

 With such a wave of positivity surrounding Fei Liu’s creations, it is no surprise to note that he has received industry acclaim for his designs, too. At our last count, he has won or has been nominated for over 27 awards during his career,  including awards for specific jewelry designs and collections, such as the IJL Editor’s Choice Award - Visual Impact for Green Tourmaline Feather Neckpiece (Shown above) in 2015, being named Designer of the Year in 2016 at the UK Jewellery Awards, the Silver Collection of the Year award in 2018 by Professional Jeweller for his understated ‘Magnolia’ range that holds a special space in our hearts thanks to its shimmering elegance comprised of satin-polished sterling silver, rhodium, and cat’s eye quartz, the Best Online Designer Jewellery award in 2018 by Harper’s Bazaar China, and was named the Most Personal Creative Jewellery Company – West Midlands in 2020 at the Global Excellence Awards. All of these are highly prestigious awards prove he is one of the finest artisans.

 The first award Fei Liu received, though, dated back way before the successes listed above - a Silver award for the British Goldsmith Craftsmanship and Design Awards. It was January 2000 and at the time Fei Liu was enjoying his breakfast when the phone rang with a well-spoken lady on the other end informing him that he’d won the award. Being just two years into his degree, and very much a ‘novice’ in his mind, he hung up on her. A rude joke, he thought. Yet when he arrived at college a couple of hours later there was no denying it. Colleagues, lecturers, and other staff spent most of the day coming up to him and congratulating him on his success. He became the first from the Birmingham School of Jewellery to win the award. It was true, and the ceremony was to happen in March – as fate would have it – on his mother’s birthday.

 While success was always on the cards for Fei Liu, it wasn’t until six years after that phone call that he set up his store in the heart of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. While some may say to strike while the iron is hot, Fei Liu preferred a cautious approach to his global brand development, choosing instead to learn advanced business principles and further improve his jewelry making and design skills before opening his own store. The proof is in the pudding. While some brands have come and gone, Fei Liu has gone from strength to strength, garnering retail and commercial success in the UK through Harrods and Selfridges, in China where he is so popular he has collaborated with Miss China herself, and here in the US, where stores such as ours are chosen to offer his very unique style of jewelry to our discerning customers. It is clear to see that he has come a very long way from his humble beginnings making ink marks on paper, yet creativity, like life itself, always finds a way to thrive even in the most obscure of circumstances.
